Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood has confirmed that there have been discussions to re-release the successful franchise in 3D, and if the effects are done right, he’ll support the decision. The news comes as the series’ director, Peter Jackson, is busy working on The Hobbit, the upcoming two-part prequel series to the trilogy, and talked about 3D in his latest video blog.

/Film is reporting that Wood said he thinks it would be interesting to see the Lord of the Rings films released in 3D.

“I’m okay with with doing post-process 3D, as long as someone takes the time…I know they wouldn’t dimensonalize it unless it was a super meticulous process.”

Wood pointed out that with the upcoming re-releases of Titanic and Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace in 3D, there’s a genuine possibility that the Lord of the Rings films can get the treatment as well. But he wants the conversion to be done correctly.

When a movie doesn’t have the budget and the time to devote to it and they’re not fine-tuning the detail of that, it can look really bad and cheap.

Jacskon is just one notable director who is finally embracing 3D. Titatnic‘s James Cameron and Star WarsGeorge Lucas have embraced the medium, as well as Martin Scorsese, who just released his first 3D film, Hugo.

Wood is right that the Lord of the Rings films should only be re-released in 3D if Jackson can devote the time needed to create interesting, impressive effects that add to the plot. With the Hobbit film being released in 2013, it may be best if the director waits to re-release the original trilogy until 2016, making it coincide with the 15th anniversary of the The Fellowship of the Ring.
