Diane Keaton Assumed Lena Dunham Was a Lesbian at Jen Aniston Party

Well, that's awkward. As if it wasn't wild enough to be invited to Jennifer Aniston's house for her annual Christmas party, Girls star Lena Dunham had a meeting with Diane Keaton — and what transpired will go down in history as one of the most awkward celebrity chats ever.

Recounting her friendship with Trainwreck's Judd Apatow during a conversation with the director at New York City's Lincoln Center on July 13, Dunham told the audience about that fated party when she and Apatow ran into Keaton for the first time.

As Dunham, 29, tells it, Keaton was rather forward when she was introduced to the actress through Apatow, 47. "Is this your wife?" Keaton, 69, asked Apatow, who has been married to actress Leslie Mann since 1997. He replied, "No, this is my friend Lena, and she's significantly younger than me."

This is where things got complicated. Remembers longtime LGBT supporter Dunham, "[She asked me] 'Do you even like men? Are you interested in men?' It was the best thing."

Added the starstruck Girls showrunner (via Vulture): "Diane Keaton straight-up was just like, Oh, there's a lesbian, and I'm Diane Keaton, so I don't even need to beat around the proverbial bush. I'll just let her know."

Dunham, currently dating fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff, wasn’t fazed by the incident, but pal Apatow saw things a little differently. "That may be more about Diane Keaton's judgment of me and my ability to bring a woman," he told the crowd at the Film Society of Lincoln Center event.
